Bassie accidentally breaks some stuff at a flea market, forcing them to buy all the broken stuff, including an old, now broken, painting with a ship on it. A treasure map appears to be hidden behind the painting. The text reads: "On one of the islands where birds bark, there is a broken lance. If you stand at the top of the lance with the egg in the back, you will see a small moon when the large moon has taken the water with it. That's where the x is." Together with their friends from the B&A boys (the football team founded by Bassie and Adriaan), robot Robin and dog Lara, they try to find out where the treasure is located. The Baron, B2 and Quick Japie also go after the treasure map and try to get it in all kinds of mean ways. The map eventually leads Bassie and Adriaan to Lanzarote, a Canary Island, but this does not happen without some problems: the three crooks are after the duo. The crooks even manage to steal Bassie and Adriaan's car together with Robin the robot. But Bassie and Adriaan manage to save Robin the robot and the search for the treasure can continue. When Bassie and Adriaan find the treasure in a cave on a mountain at the northernmost part of the island, they are captured by the crooks. However, they are very disappointed when it turns out that the treasure is a chest of pepper. They tie Bassie and Adriaan to the treasure chest and leave them in the cave, but thanks to a pool of water that expands the straps, Bassie and Adriaan are able to escape. They take the coffin to the Netherlands and when they get there, the coffin fittings turn out to be made of pure gold. But the criminals are still at large. The inspector says that he cannot arrest the crooks for the kidnapping of Bassie and Adriaan in the cave on Lanzarote because there is no evidence for this. The crooks are lured into a trap because Adriaan secretly has a listening device in their hiding place. Just then they talk about how all their crimes were for nothing. This provides enough evidence to arrest them.
