Bassie and Adriaan, a clown and an acrobat who work at the circus, wake up far too late because Bassie has not set the alarm. They miss the departure of the circus and end up without a job. Bassie and Adriaan live in a caravan and have no permanent job, so they look for one.
They try out different jobs, from baker to waiter. Actually, this should be successful, but they are being harassed by a certain pest. This bully, who always wears a black cloak and a mask based on a jester, makes everything go wrong so that Bassie and Adriaan are fired everywhere, and they are still out of work. They even lose the caravan and the car because of this pest. Fortunately for the two, they still have their friend Douwe, who, just like the plague spirit, shows up everywhere and helps the two as best he can. Ultimately, Bassie and Adriaan find a new circus that wants to hire them. Douwe also gets a job here.
During the series it is strongly suggested that Douwe himself is the tease. At a certain point Adriaan starts to suspect this too. This is not entirely certain as the plague spirit is never unmasked. After seeing a circus performance by Bassie and Adriaan, he decides to stop his behavior and become a clown. He throws away his tease costume and informs Bassie and Adriaan in a letter that he regrets his actions.
