In Nieuw-Zeeland, nabij het plaatje Matamata, is de filmset van de Hobbits gebouwd. Voor de films van Lord of the Rings werd hier een grote set gebouwd van Hobbiton en The Shire. Voor de films van The Hobbit werd op deze plek opnieuw dezelfde set opgebouwd. Na de filmopnames is de set niet afgebroken maar dient deze nu als toeristische attractie.
